Stephanie Madsen is the latest recipient of the Vera Alexander Award for Marine Science and Education.

The award was established in 2015 by the , an industry-funded research consortium managed by the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Named after CFOS’ first dean, the Vera Alexander Award is given “in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and education to improve understanding and management of the priceless natural resource heritage of the North Pacific.”

“Stephanie is highly deserving of the Vera Alexander Award,” said CFOS Dean Bradley Moran. “She has been a stalwart supporter of CFOS academic programs, faculty and students, and I am truly thankful for her exemplary service.”

Madsen was recognized at the annual PCCRC meeting in January, which also marked the 25th anniversary for the center.

The PCCRC was established in 2000 to improve knowledge about the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea through research and education. Research funds focus on the commercial fisheries of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands.

Through 2024, the PCCRC funded $17.3 million for marine research and education. The center is the largest single private contributor to marine research at the University of Alaska.
