I served primarily in 3 locations: 1) Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX from 2007-2010, 2) 4th Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 2010-2013, and 3) during my time at Fort Carson, I deployed with 4th Infantry Division to COB Speicher, Iraq from 2010-2011. CAPT Daryl Schaffer
Coast Guard
Daryl retired after an active duty career of nearly 31 years and is using the Post-9/11 GI Bill to study the Security and Disaster Management for a second Masters degree (and possible PhD). Originally both from MN, he and his wife moved 12 times, living in every part of the country. As a Wounded Warrior, Daryl had to re-learn how to do daily activities which changed their future; he now needs to use a trekking pole in order to walk. Daryl appreciates all the people he has served with throughout the year and for serving the American people.

Phil Rounds
Air Force
Phil Rounds served during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Air Force. His father was a U.S. Marine in the Korean War and a Drill Instructor at MCRD San Diego. I met Phil at University Fire Department, I served in the U.S. Marines. He was my friend and mentor. He died in the Line of Duty due to job related cancer in November of 2008. On my 20th year at University Fire, I still think of Phil every day. He'd greet me with an old Marine Corps name for fox hole buddy, "Well, what's going on today, Watash!"
Willard "Buck" Whitaker
Marine Corps
Buck Whitaker was a U.S. Marine in the Pacific War fighting at Guadalcanal, Peleliu and Okinawa. Years later he was the first official paid fire chief of the University Fire Department. Prior to joining UAF, Buck had served in Ft. Wainwright Fire Department and at the Fairbanks International Airport Fire Department. His leadership molded the department and shaped its course by providing mentoring and fire service training, updated equipment and a sense of Espirit de Corps that still thrives within the department. Those of us that met him or served under him will never forget him.

Understanding how your role fits in the large picture takes time to learn, especially in a large organization. I benefited by having my first supervisor to point out the importance it was to be resilient and dependable. Even though I was a lower enlisted mechanic, the engineers would be heavily curtailed in their mission if I didn't pitch in my full effort.
I want to highlight the different opportunities I had while in the Army. I had learned to continue breaking the mold by setting up my own bar. In my experience, it was being a paratrooper private to running a maintenance shop as a Sergeant. I continued my education, such as learning new Army logistical programs and chosen to train on a WWII weapon system. By far, the best experience was going through the Army pre-ranger course as they determined if females had the grit for it.
I am glad to have lived in Alaska and earning my degree at UAF.
Strive to learn constantly and set out on your own unique path with optimism.
Air Force
This photo showcases myself, Staff Sergeant Christina Love, and my grandpa, Retired Senior Master Sergeant Thomas Brown, at two different milestones in our careers. This is a merging of two different generations serving with the same purpose and faithfully to our proud heritage. The story I would like to share is when I told my grandpa that I would be moving to Eielson Air Force Base. He would ask if there were underground tunnels and if I had used them because of the inclement weather. I never did find those tunnels but as my first winter arrived I knew they would have been great to have!
